Our team is a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants (CAPIC) and we regularly take part in CAPIC member meetings and seminars, discussing the latest Canadian Immigration updates and announcements from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Here are the latest Canadian Immigration news you need yo know:

  • IRCC is currently dealing with a significant application processing backlog as a result of ongoing service disruptions and the subsequent backlog of IRCC due to COVID 19. Since the start of the pandemic, IRCC officers have been working remotely with a reduced capacity. Processing times for visitor extension, study and work permit applications are taking longer than usual. Applications that are related to healthcare, essential work and of immediate family matter are being prioritized.

  • IRCC is behind normal schedule with Family sponsorship applications registrations.  These applications are paper based and fairly complex, and need to be registered upon receipt by IRCC. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, IRCC officers are returning to the case processing centres and will start confirming the receipts of these types of applications.

  • IRCC is planning to start a virtual landing process for those whose application for Permanent Residence was approved after March 18, 2020.

  • No new announcements have been made regarding Canadian citizenship ceremonies for the foreseeable future. However, IRCC is planning to make the ceremony happen online.
